So, as a lot of you have probably noticed, I've started interviewing congressional candidates for this blog, asking them about their plans to address to corrupting influence of money in politics, and about their campaigns in general. Well, with the next primary election coming up this week in Ohio, I figured now would be a good time to roll out a list of endorsements for progressives running in the primaries. So, without any further ado, let's go down the list of my endorsement for Ohio.
Morgan Harper (OH-03)
Morgan is running for Congress in the Democratic primary, challenging four-term incumbent Rep. Joyce Beatty. A former special advisor to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) director, her candidacy has been endorsed by progressive groups such as Brand New Congress, her local Democratic Socialists of America chapter, Justice Democrats, and Sunrise Movement. Her platform includes Medicare For All, a Green New Deal, a living wage, affordable housing, tuition-free college, and a universal basic income.
Xavier Carrigan (OH-05)
(Source: WDTN.com)
Seeking to unseat Republican Rep. Bob Latta, Xavier's campaign has been backed by the Rose Caucus, an organization seeking to elect socialists and democratic socialists to Congress. He is running on Medicare For All, a Green New Deal, ending the idea that "money = speech," canceling student loan debt, a $15 minimum wage, criminal justice reform, ending the wars, etc.
Honorable Mention: Nick Rubando
Peter Rosewicz (OH-09)
A loan officer running against longtime Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who has served in Congress for nearly four decades. I had the pleasure of interviewing Peter in March, where he outlined in great detail his motives to run for Congress, and what he plans to do should he be elected. He is running on health care for all, forgiving medical debt, tuition-free college, campaign finance reform, etc. Also, from my interview with him, a really affable dude in general!
Eric Moyer (OH-10)
(Source: Ballotpedia)
Eric is an Alzheimer's researcher who is running to defeat Republican Rep. Mike Turner. His policies include Medicare For All, a Green New Deal, ending corporate personhood, universal child care, and gun reform.
Michael Hood (OH-11)
(Source: Ballotpedia)
Michael is challenging Rep. Marcia Fudge in the Democratic primary. A Navy veteran, his platform includes Medicare For All, a Green New Deal, canceling student loan debt, tuition-free college, equal pay for women/minorities, and strengthening Social Security.
Daniel Kilgore (OH-15)
Like with Peter Rosewicz, I was happy to interview Daniel for this blog a while ago. Although he is running in a district, against Republican Rep. Steve Stivers, that is considered to be "Safe Republican," he is confident that he can get bipartisan support among voters, as evidenced by the fact that a number of Republican voters helped him collect signatures to put his name on the ballot. Among his policies are a Second Bill of Rights (as called for by Franklin D. Roosevelt), Medicare For All, a Green New Deal, making the wealthy/corporations pay their fair share in taxes, banning corporate lobbying, and has proposed the Aaron Burr: Public Servants Trust Act, which he says would "fine those taking lobbyist funds before a vote or insider trading. For these actions may influence their votes against the public interest and if they are found to have done so they maybe expelled from Congress."
Aaron Godfrey (OH-16)
Aaron is a physicist challenging Republican Rep. Anthony Gonzalez for Congress. His platform includes Medicare For All, tuition-free college, ending gerrymandering, a living wage, and banning fracking.
Well, those are all the endorsements I have for Congress in Ohio. Just a reminder that if you live in Ohio, your ballot must be postmarked by tomorrow (April 27) for it to count. Please remember to vote, and good luck to all these great candidates!
