Recap of Oregon Primaries

(Source: The New York Times)

Wow, I'm actually kind of speechless. I know I don't exactly have a good track record when it comes to endorsements, but I had at least some hope that this would be my best night yet. I have never been more wrong about anything political in my entire life. War on the Swamp endorsed candidates running in each of Oregon's five congressional districts, and a grand total of zero of them won. That's a little embarrassing, you have to admit. But anyway, let's jump right into it.

Starting in District 1, Amanda Siebe lost her bid to unseat Rep. Susan Bonamici in what was easily the most crushing landslide of Tuesday night. With 73.1% of precincts reporting, Amanda currently sits in third place with 6.4% of the vote, to Bonamici's 84.6% and Heidi Briones's (who was an honorable mention for the primary) 6.6%.

Moving to the second district, the race remains uncalled, with Alex Spenser and Nik Heuertz neck-and-neck, respectively at 32.9% and 31.7%, with 75.3% reporting. While I endorsed Chris Vaughn, who appears to have finished third with 18.7% of the vote, Nik was an honorable mention, so I held off on doing this recap until the race was called, holding out hope for him to win. However, this morning, Nik conceded to Spenser. Despite Chris's double-digit loss, it was actually the closest one of War on the Swamp's endorsees came to winning their primary on Tuesday, for whatever that's worth.

Meanwhile, in the third district, Rep. Earl Blumenauer won renomination decisively; with 81.6% of the vote in, he leads Albert Lee 81.3-16.5%. In District 4, Doyle Canning was defeated by Rep. Peter DeFazio in yet another landslide, losing 15.2-84.8%, with 86% reporting. Finally, the most devastating loss came out of District 5, where Mark Gamba lost to Rep. Kurt Schrader, one of the most conservative Democrats in the House. With 78.4% of precincts reporting, Schrader appears to have won 70.4-22.4%.

So, those are the results as they currently stand. Easily the worst results from War on the Swamp's three rounds of endorsements so far. Well, I guess I learned my lesson about getting my hopes up. The good news is that there are a bunch of primaries on June 2, so that gives plenty of opportunities for progressive challengers to emerge. I'll be back over the weekend with my endorsements for those primaries, so I'll see you guys then! Take care!
