5/12 Results for War on the Swamp Endorsees

Well, another Tuesday, another day of primary elections, and another round of War on the Swamp endorsements. Last week, I announced endorsements for the Nebraska primaries, as well as for a congressional special election in Wisconsin. How did they fare? Well, not that good. But let's jump right into the results, anyway.

To start with the positives, in Nebraska's 2nd district, Kara Eastman won her primary by a landslide, defeating fellow Democrats Ann Ashford and Gladys Harrison by 30 and 55 points, respectively, with 93.3% reporting. This district is by far the most competitive in the state, and Kara only lost this district against Republican Rep. Don Bacon by two points last time around. Therefore, she has a very good chance of defeating him this time, and we should all work hard to help get her over the edge.

Moving on to the Senate race, Angie Philips was unfortunately defeated in the Democratic primary by Chris Janicek. With 98.4% reporting, Philips trails Janicek by seven points. However, the good news is that Janicek is still a solid progressive (I gave him an honorable mention when I endorsed Philips) who supports single-payer health care, a living wage, etc. As such, I hereby endorse Chris Janicek in his race against Sen. Ben Sasse this November.

Now, onto the bad news. In Nebraska's 1st district, progressive Babs Ramsey lost her primary to Kate Bolz by a landslide margin of 56 points. This is unfortunate, as Ramsey ran on a strong progressive platform and took no corporate PAC nor lobbyist money. In spite of her loss, however, we should all wish her all the best in her future endeavors. She still has a lot of good to offer Nebraska, and the nation, and I hope she runs again in the future.

Moving on to Wisconsin, there was a special election yesterday to replace Rep. Sean Duffy, who resigned back in September. Despite the Republican lean of the 7th district, I was still somewhat hopeful that Tricia Zunker could pull off a victory in it. However, that was not the case. Republican Tom Tiffany defeated her by a significant 14-point margin. In spite of this, Zunker did improve on the Democrats' performance in this district by seven points, compared to the 2018 election, which is some silver lining.

So, those are the results for yesterday's elections. A mixed-to-negative bag overall, but I will be back either later today or tomorrow for War on the Swamp's endorsements for the next round of primaries next Tuesday, May 19. I'll see you guys then!
